Intent

Here at Haslam Park Primary School we recognise the value that a high-quality languages curriculum can offer to our pupils. A large proportion of our pupils are bilingual and as such, are natural linguists. We feel that this is something to celebrate and exploit while allowing pupils to demonstrate their natural ability.

At Haslam Park Primary School, our Key Stage 2 pupils study Spanish as their modern foreign language. This decision was made as a result of researching our local secondary school offers and recognising Spanish as the second most spoken language globally. When considering both factors, we feel that Spanish is a perfect way of enabling our pupils to be ready for and access Key Stage 3 language study and become global citizens, ready for the world of work.  

Our fantastic external providers – Primary Languages Network- will enable us to deliver on our intent while upskilling staff and ensuring that MFL at Haslam Park is one of the many jewels in our crown.

All pupils (particularly disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND) are entitled to a regularly taught, language curriculum which provides them with the opportunity to develop secure skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing through carefully structured and sequenced lessons throughout Key Stage 2.

Language learning will be fun Haslam Park Primary School through the use of varied activities, songs, role-play and interactive games. By using topics which link to other curriculum areas, children will be able to embed knowledge and see how it can be used in real life. The curriculum content and sequence takes into account ‘best practice’ research into language teaching with an emphasis on enabling children to have plenty of opportunities for repetition and retention with a view to build confidence and a secure knowledge of vocabulary.

Implementation

All Key Stage pupils will take part in a weekly Spanish lesson, delivered by Senorita Ormes from the Primary Languages Network. During these lessons, they will have the opportunity to develop a range of secure vocabulary and be able to use this vocabulary in a variety of sentence using correct grammar. Children will be provided with activities which enable them to build on their previously learned knowledge throughout Key Stage 2.

• Speaking skills will progress from using simple words and phrases to being able to join ideas and sentences together during, for example, presentations and

• Listening skills will progress from recognising simple words and phrases to being able to understand longer texts and more complex vocabulary and sentence

• Reading skills will progress from understanding simple words and phrases to understanding stories and non-fiction (including subject-specific vocabulary).

• Writing skills with progress from writing simple words and phrases to writing at length with joined sentences and using the correct grammar, for a variety of text

The Spanish curriculum is enriched by other opportunities for pupils to share and apply their knowledge. These include: parent assemblies followed by stay and learn sessions as well as enrichment days to celebrate European Day of Languages, our pen pal schemes with other PLN schools and Spanish cultural festivals such as San Fermin.

Impact

Our languages curriculum aims to develop within pupils a love of learning languages and a secure knowledge and understand of Spanish so that children are confident to use Spanish both orally (for speaking and listening) and in writing (both for writing and reading).Our learning is progressive which means that with each half term, term and year that goes by, we are constantly building on our Spanish knowledge so that by the time our pupils leave primary school, they are ready for the challenges that come with learning languages at their chosen secondary school. 

The impact of our curriculum will be evident in the data collected during half-termly assessments of the four key skills- reading, writing, speaking and listening and when gathering information from pupil voice activities.

Celebrating Haslam Park

At Haslam Park, we speak many languages and we are very proud of this fact. We worked very hard to immerse our pupils in a language-rich environment and we are incredibly proud to say we have featured in Primary Language Network's blog about celebrating language diversity and Spanish immerision in our wonderful school.

Feliz Navidad from Haslam Park Primary School 

Our amazing year 5 and 6 pupils took part in a penpal exchange with another PLN school during which they designed a festive card and wrote a message to their new pen pal in Spanish.  Not only were they THRILLED to receive their card from their penpal, but the cards they produced were simply beautiful. This was an opportunity for our pupils to apply their Spanish knowledge to a writing activity - giving our pupils the opportunity to write for a purpose is incredibly important to us at Haslam Park and this was a perfect chance to demonstrate what we have learned.  

Festive MFL Fun

Across Key Stage 2, we will be marking the festive season with a wonderful languages advent calendar, thanks to Primary Languages Network. Each day, a new festive picture and video is shared with new vocabulary shared in either Spanish, German or French. Our pupils will also be sharing what this word is in the languages they speak at home.

AUTUMN 2022 SPANISH LEARNING YEAR 3-6

 Year 3- 6 have got off to a flying start in their Spanish lessons in the autumn term. Please take a look at the sample of the brilliant work below.  

MOORE CLASS' EXCELLENT SPANISH ASSEMBLY - 10th November 2022

Moore Class showed our parents what they have been learning about in MFL lessons. They were amazing! 

Our parents then stayed for a stay and learn session in which we all applied our learning of colour names in Spanish. 

MARVELLOUS MFL NEWS

During one of our recent MFL sessions, Wissal (year 6 Mandela Class) demonstrated the ability to share key information about herself: her likes, dislikes and things that are important to her. Senorita Thompson was so impressed that she suggested we share it on our Twitter page. 

Within days, the wonderful teachers at the Primary Languages Network contacted us to ask if we could use Wissal's video in their training course materials to share what 'the gold standard' of year 6 MFL looks like. What an achievement!

In our Spanish lessons, we apply our acquisition of new words and phrases in Spanish to the four DFE skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. This makes our learning rich, varied and embedded.
